Laziness vs Freedom

My daughter is in her Junior year and is taking US History.  They are currently discussing the Cold War and Communism. As we were talking, she asked me why do people gravitate towards this form of government which always ends in Totalitarianism.  As I thought about it I said the following:

I believe in every person there are 2 basic forces at play: the desire to be FREE and the desire to be LAZY.

Take for example, young people who have just graduated from high school or college.  On one hand they desire to be on their own and making their own decisions.  No longer can they be told by their parents when to come home, what time to get up and what they can do or not do.  At the same time these very same people desire to stay at home and be taken care of.  Living on your own has its own set of problems such as: paying your bills on time, cooking your own food, cleaning your own cloths, saving money for emergencies and taking yourself to the doctor when you don't feel well. It's SOOooo much easier to have someone else there to take care of all these things for you and for you to do nothing but be lazy.

Of course these desires are not limited to just young adults, as all of us have both of these forces inside of us.  Of course the desire to be FREE takes hard work, responsibility, sweat, diligence, and faith and self-control.  This is what America was built on and you see this when you read about our founding fathers.  How many of them were at the same time, leaders, writers, inventors, farmers, business owners and ambassadors.  They spent long hard days to make their dreams of a free country come true.

On the other side are those who desire to be LAZY more than they desire to be free.  They are like Esau, willing to sell their freedom for a plate of beans and to be taken care of.  The lazy desire to have everything given to them ; job, money, education, healthcare, retirement rather than to work for it.  Communisim is built on the backs of the LAZY and that is why it always fails as eventually the government must "whip" its LAZY subjects to make them work and these "whippings" eventually stir up their internal desire for...

FREEDOM!!

And so there you have it.  The price of FREEDOM is that you can't be LAZY and the price of being LAZY is FREEDOM.  And we see this at work today in our own country.  We became LAZY in respect to our countries politics.  I think we each believed that America could never go down the road of socialism towards communism.  We believed the the shear inertia of our history and will would keep us always on course like a giant oil tanker.  But little did we realize that small little tug-boats down below were slowly pushing our boat off course and pointing us towards the rocks.  And now, its "ALL HANDS ON DECK" to save this ship.
