If you heard Obama's speeches in Europe you would think he was requesting the EU for membership. Heralding their abilities to work together and lead the world in cooperation. Does Obama think that if we join the EU (a receding ocean under Obama's control should enable us to join our land-masses eventually) he will be elected to be their leader as well. It's not surprising, egomaniacs like Obama can never be fulfilled enough and they must press on to higher and bigger things.
I don't think the EU is as cooperative as one might think. If you remember back a few years ago, Frances President Chirac was certain that he would get France to sign the EU constitution, but failed to do so (and he was later voted out of office as a message from the French people). In fact, the only thing hold them together in any sense of the word today is the Euro and this was only voted through as a form of travel convenience amongst the europeans.
All I can say is this. Mr Obama, why don't you claim your citizenship over there and run for their office. Maybe then you and your wife can live in a country you can be "truly proud of".
